Lots of Chargepoint Home Flex chargers have lost their green halo

Update on June 19, 2022:  As of a couple of days ago, my two Chargepoint Home Flex chargers have quietly started showing their green halo again, and the left-side LED for wifi is again a steady green light.  I believe this is due to the Chargepoint company somehow repairing its broken cloud.

There are something like a quarter million Chargepoint Home Flex chargers (photo above right) in service across the US.  When the charger is happy, the halo around the charging plug is green such as you see in this photo.  But in recent weeks, the halo has been white, for a substantial fraction of the Chargepoint Home Flex chargers that are in service across the US.  What does this change of the color of the halo mean?

Normally the halo is green and what it means is that the Home Flex charger has a happy connection to wifi, and thus to the Internet, and thus to the cloud server that Chargepoint uses to monitor and configure the Home Flex chargers.

Closely related to this is an LED on the left side of the Home Flex charger (see photo at right) which usually lights up green to show a happy connection to wifi.

In recent weeks, the halo has often been white instead of green.  The user manual says this means the Home Flex charger has lost its connection to wifi.  And in recent weeks, the wifi LED on the left side of the Home Flex charger has often been dark.  The user manual says this also means the Home Flex charger has lost its connection to wifi.

The homeowner might then spend hours trying to get the Home Flex charger reconnected to the wifi at the home.  No matter how carefully the homeowner might try to get this to work, the homeowner will fail.  The explanation, it turns out, is that the Chargepoint cloud for monitoring and configuring Home Flex chargers is broken.

The Chargepoint tech support people tell me that this is a known problem.  They tell me that “the software people” at Chargepoint who are responsible for this cloud are trying to get the cloud working again.  When it is working again, the halos will return to their normal happy green color and the wifi LED on the left side will return to its happy green lit status.

During this outage, I am told that for most home owners, the Home Flex charger is likely to continue to provide EV charging services at the amperage that the home owner is expecting.
